How does His Dark Materials fit the conventions of the fantasy TV genre?

  • Emotive, often quest-based narratives
  • Political narrative themes or social commentary
  • Iconography including magic, mystical creatures or similar
  • Often set in imagined worlds or time periods

Can we apply Propp's character theory to the main characters in His Dark Materials?

  • The Hero (Seeker): Lyra Belacqua
  • The Villain: Marisa Coulter
  • The Donor (Provider): Pan
  • The Helper: Will Parry
  • What enigma and action codes (Barthes) can you find in His Dark Materials?

    Enigma Codes

  • What is Dust?: The overarching mystery of what Dust actually is, why the Magisterium fears it, and why it only settles on adults drives the entire franchise.
  • Who are Lyra’s Parents?: The mystery of Lord Asriel and Mrs. Coulter’s true relationship to Lyra dominates the early episodes, creating intense audience curiosity about her origins.
  • Action Codes:
    • Kidnappings & Escapes: Events like Lyra fleeing from the General Oblation Board, or being trapped by Mrs. Coulter, function as high-energy action codes that drive the physical plot and force immediate reactions.
    • Armed Conflicts: Scenes such as the witches taking to the sky with arrows, or Asriel’s forces attacking the Authority involve clear action codes.
What examples of binary opposition (Levi-Strauss) can you find in His Dark Materials?

    - An example of Binary Opposition in His Dark Materials is the comparison of good and evil shown in Will and Lyra being represented as good and Marisa being represented as evil and a dark force.

    Representations

How are women represented in His Dark Materials?

    - Women are represented as powerful and independent in the show which subverts decades old stereotypes in television that portray women as weak and dependent on the male leads of the shows.

How are men and masculinity represented in His Dark Materials?
    -  Men are portrayed as authoritative figures in the show like Lord Asriel who embodies masculinity and power.

How is age represented in His Dark Materials? Does the show reinforce or challenge stereotypes about young people?

    - The way age is represented in the show subverts prior representations of teenagers in television by the way they are independent and don't need to be guided by an adult.

How is race and ethnicity represented in His Dark Materials? Are stereotypes reinforced or subverted?

    - The show subverts racial stereotypes by having a very diverse cast, even changing originally White characters to have actors who are POC's such as Will Parry now having an actor of Mixed heritage or Lee Scoresby being played by Lin Manuel Miranda who is of Puerto Rican descent.

    Audience

    - I think the Audience Demographic that the majority of His Dark Materials fans fit into is probably the Explorer because of the show's adventurous qualities.

What audience pleasures are offered by His Dark Materials - The City of Magpies?

    • Personal Identity:
    - The show provides audiences, particularly younger viewers, with characters who reflect the transition into adolescence. Viewers see themselves in Lyra's rebelliousness and her search for truth, as well as Will's vulnerability and kindness, which subverts the traditionally stoic masculinity seen in fantasy.
    • Personal Relationships:
    - The relationship between characters and their daemons (e.g., Lyra and Pan) offers a unique representation of companionship, allowing viewers to explore themes of loyalty, empathy, and the unconditional bond between a soul and its manifestation.
    • Diversion (Escapism)::
The episode transports audiences away from everyday routines by introducing the mysterious, empty city. This provides a classic escapist pleasure—immersion into a visually distinct, magical realm filled with suspense and danger.

Thinking of the 3 Vs audience pleasures,
which of these can be applied to His Dark Materials?

    • Vicarious:
    - The audience get to experience the magical world that the characters live in with them.
    • Voyeuristic:
    - The audience get to see their favourite characters and keep tabs on their whereabouts.
    • Visceral:
    -  The audience get experience the action and feel the thrill of the danger the characters are in.

How did fans react to Season 2 of His Dark Materials?

Fans had a largely positive reaction to Season 2 of His Dark Materials. While many viewers praised the improved pacing and the growing chemistry between leads Dafne Keen and Amir Wilson, others felt the season was scattered and missed the deeper wonder of Philip Pullman's novels

What might be some of the preferred and oppositional readings for His Dark Materials?

    Preferred Reading:

Reverence for the Material World: Rather than treating the physical realm as "fallen," readers understand the books' core message as a celebration of life, nature, and bodily existence over abstract, afterlife-focused theology.

    Oppositional Reading:

Subversion of Innocence: While intended as a pro-growth message, some audiences see the celebration of Lyra’s emerging adulthood and the "killing of God" as a destructive attack on childhood purity and traditional morality
